Aveda Miraculous Oil, Explained

A concentrated shine oil built on daikon seed, Tsubaki, and camelina. Here's how to use it.

Most hair oils promise shine. Aveda's Miraculous Oil actually delivers it — measurably. In Aveda's own testing, hair treated with this concentrate showed up to 195% more shine instantly and became twice as smooth. Those aren't marketing numbers pulled from thin air; they come from a proprietary instrument called the SAMBA that measures how light refracts off each strand.

What makes Miraculous Oil different from the dozens of hair oils on the market is what's inside. The formula is built around daikon seed oil — an ingredient Aveda spent six years developing before finding the right product for it. Combined with Tsubaki seed oil and camelina oil ferment, it delivers shine, 24-hour frizz protection, and heat shielding up to 450°F in a lightweight concentrate that won't weigh your hair down or leave it greasy.

At Tangerine Salon, we've been using Miraculous Oil in every styling service since it launched — from blowouts and color finishing to extension installs. This guide covers how it works, how to apply it by hair type, and why our stylists consider it the single best finishing product Aveda has ever made.

What Makes Miraculous Oil Different

The formula centers on three botanical oils, each sourced with traceability and each serving a distinct function. Understanding the ingredients helps explain why this oil feels and performs differently from conventional silicone-heavy shine serums.

Daikon Seed Oil Willamette Valley, Oregon

The hero ingredient. Daikon seed oil has an exceptionally high refractive index, meaning light bounces off it more effectively than most plant oils. It's responsibly sourced from cooperative farms that grow daikon as a cover crop to protect soil health.

Tsubaki Seed Oil Jeju Island, Korea

Hand-harvested and cold-pressed without chemical solvents, Tsubaki (camellia) oil deeply conditions each strand. It's the ingredient that gives Miraculous Oil its smoothing, softening weight without heaviness.

Camelina Oil Ferment Omega 3, 6, 9 Rich

A first in hair care — this fermented oil adds weightless conditioning and radiance through a rich blend of omega fatty acids. It's what allows the concentrate to feel light while delivering deep nourishment.

The formula is also vegan, Leaping Bunny approved, and free from parabens, mineral oil, and phthalates. The bottle itself is made from post-consumer recycled PET. It carries Aveda's signature Pure-Fume™ aroma — 25 pure flower and plant essences including lavender, ylang-ylang, and petitgrain, blended in-house at Aveda's botanical aroma lab.

How to Apply Miraculous Oil by Hair Type

This is a concentrate, which means a little goes a long way. The most common mistake is using too much — start with less than you think you need and add from there. Here's how our stylists at Dallas, Frisco, and every Tangerine location approach application.

Fine to Medium Hair

Use sparingly on ends only. Dispense a small drop into your palms, warm it by pressing your hands together, then smooth through the ends of dry hair. Avoid the root zone and mid-lengths entirely — fine hair shows oil more quickly, and even a touch too much can make it look flat. On damp hair before a blowout, the smallest amount through the ends adds a glass-like finish without sacrificing volume. Pair with Phomollient styling foam at the roots for the best of both worlds — volume where you need it, shine where it counts.

Medium to Thick Hair

Work through mid-lengths and ends. Thicker hair can handle more product and benefits from coverage through the full bottom half of the hair. On damp hair, distribute evenly from mid-lengths to ends before blow-drying for all-day smoothness and frizz protection. On dry hair, use it as a finishing touch — a few drops smoothed over the surface tames flyaways and adds dimension that catches light. This is the technique our stylists use most often on balayage guests, where the oil enhances the contrast between light and dark tones.

Curly, Coily, or Textured Hair

Layer it into your styling routine. Apply to damp hair after your leave-in conditioner but before your styling product (cream, gel, or Nutriplenish foam). The oil seals in moisture and creates a light barrier against humidity — essential for keeping curls defined through a DFW afternoon. For a diffused style, apply mid-lengths through ends and scrunch upward before diffusing. The result is defined, frizz-free curls with a natural sheen.

Color-Treated or Chemically Processed Hair

Color processing opens the hair cuticle, which is why color-treated hair often looks dull and feels rough. Miraculous Oil smooths the cuticle back down, restoring the light-reflecting surface that makes color look rich and vibrant. Use it after every wash as a finishing step, and bring it to your next color appointment — your stylist can incorporate it into the finishing process. For more tips on maintaining vibrancy between visits, see our color maintenance guide.

Proven on the Sideline

Miraculous Oil made its debut at DCC Rookie Makeover Day at our Coppell location — the annual transformation where incoming Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders receive custom color, cuts, and Bellami extensions. Our team used it as the finishing step on every rookie, adding the camera-ready shine and frizz protection needed for performance under stadium lights. If it holds up to a DCC makeover, it'll hold up to your Tuesday.

Five Ways to Use Miraculous Oil

The concentrate format means this one bottle replaces several products depending on how you use it. Our stylists recommend these five applications, each targeting a different need.

1. Blowout finisher. After blow-drying, warm a small drop between your palms and smooth over the surface of your hair. This adds the final layer of shine that takes a good blowout to a great one. For tips on maintaining your blowout for days, read our stylist tips guide.

2. Pre-shampoo treatment. Apply generously from roots to ends on dry hair before washing. Let it sit for 15 minutes (or overnight for a deeper treatment), then shampoo as usual. The oils penetrate the strand before water and surfactants strip them away, leaving hair noticeably softer.

3. Heat protectant. Miraculous Oil shields hair up to 450°F, making it a legitimate heat protectant for blow-drying and flat ironing. Apply to damp hair before styling — it protects while adding shine in one step.

4. Extension smoother. If you wear Bellami extensions, a drop of Miraculous Oil through the extension lengths keeps them soft, tangle-free, and blending naturally with your own hair. Avoid the bonds or tape attachments. For complete extension care, visit our aftercare guide.

5. Frizz emergency fix. Keep the bottle in your bag. A tiny amount smoothed over dry hair instantly tames flyaways and humidity-induced frizz — particularly useful during Texas summers. No need to restyle; just smooth and go.

What Miraculous Oil Won't Do

Managing expectations matters with any product. Miraculous Oil excels at shine, smoothness, and frizz control — but it's not a replacement for everything. It won't add volume (use Phomollient for that). It won't repair internal bond damage (that's Botanical Repair™). And it won't hold a curl or set a style on its own — it's a finishing and conditioning product, not a styling one. Use it alongside your existing routine, not instead of it. If you're building an Aveda routine from scratch, our capsule care guide is a good starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Miraculous Oil make my hair greasy?

Not if you use the right amount. It's a concentrate — one small drop is enough for fine to medium hair, two to three drops for thick hair. The most common mistake is over-applying. Start with less, add more only if needed. If your hair tends to get oily quickly, stick to the ends only and avoid the root zone.

Can I use it every day?

Yes. Miraculous Oil washes out with each shampoo and doesn't build up on the strand. Daily use on dry hair as a finishing product is perfectly fine. For deeper conditioning, the pre-shampoo treatment once or twice a week is more than enough.

Is it safe for extensions?

Absolutely — it's one of the best products you can use on extension lengths. Just keep it away from the attachment points (bonds, tapes, or wefts). Oil near the bonds can cause slippage. Apply from mid-shaft to ends only.

How is it different from Aveda's other oils?

Miraculous Oil is a concentrated shine oil — its primary job is light-reflecting radiance and smoothness. Aveda's other oils (like the Botanical Repair Overnight Serum) focus on internal repair and strengthening. They serve different purposes and can be used together. Ask your stylist at Allen, Highland Village, or any location for a personalized recommendation.

Where can I buy it?

Miraculous Oil is available in-salon at all five Tangerine locations and through our online Aveda storefront. The 1.7 fl oz concentrate bottle is designed to last — a little goes a very long way.
