What you'll pay, what changes the price, and how to make every visit last.
Balayage at Tangerine costs $205 to $345, depending on your stylist's level: $205 with a Protégé stylist, $255–$270 with a Studio or Senior stylist, and $345 with a Master stylist. These are starting rates. Your final price depends on your hair's length and density and the technique you choose, and your colorist will give you an exact quote at your consultation.
If you're thinking about balayage, price is probably one of your first questions. Here's a straight answer from our five Dallas–Fort Worth salons, including what changes the number, how it compares with traditional highlights over a full year, and how to make your color last.
What changes the price of balayage?
Every balayage is painted by hand, so no two appointments use the same amount of time or product. These are the factors that move your price within the range above:
Your stylist's level
Tangerine uses four stylist levels: Protégé, Studio, Senior and Master. Every level is trained in the Aveda color system, and higher levels bring more years of experience. You choose the level that fits your goals and budget.
Hair length and density
Longer and thicker hair takes more lightener, more sections and more time. Our menu prices are starting rates for exactly this reason. Your colorist will look at your hair in person before quoting.
Your starting color and how light you want to go
Going from dark brunette to bright blonde takes more lift, and sometimes more than one session, than adding soft caramel ribbons to light brown hair. If your hair has old box dye or color from another salon, tell your colorist at the consultation so the plan and price are accurate from the start.
What's included
Your balayage appointment includes a consultation, lightening, a toner or gloss to set your tone, and a finished blowout. Aveda's Botanical Repair™ bond-strengthening treatment is now included in the service, so your hair is protected while it lightens.
Balayage vs. highlights: which costs more over time?
Balayage costs more per visit than traditional highlights, but you come back far less often. Over a full year, the two end up surprisingly close.
| Balayage | Traditional Highlights | |
|---|---|---|
| Price per visit | $205–$345 | Starting at $105–$151 |
| Time in the chair | About 2.5–4 hours | About 1.5–2.5 hours |
| How often to come back | Every 12–16 weeks | Every 6–8 weeks |
| Visits per year | 3–4 | 6–8 |
| Yearly cost at starting prices | About $615–$1,380 | About $630–$1,208 and up |
The real difference is how your color grows out. Balayage starts soft at the root, so there's no hard regrowth line. Highlights start at the scalp, so regrowth shows sooner. For a full side-by-side of technique, results and upkeep, read our guide to balayage vs. highlights.
Balayage grows out softly, which is why most guests only need a full refresh every 12–16 weeks
How long does balayage last?
Most of our balayage guests come back for a full refresh every 12 to 16 weeks, or three to four times a year. Because the color is painted on rather than applied at the root, your natural color grows in gradually instead of leaving a visible line.
Tone is what fades first. Blondes can turn warm or brassy between visits, and that's where a gloss comes in. A toner or gloss refresh at the 6–8 week mark brings your tone back without re-lightening, takes about 30 minutes, and lasts 4 to 6 weeks. Read more in our guide to what a hair gloss does and how long it lasts.
How to make balayage last longer
A few simple habits protect your color between visits:
- Wash with Aveda Color Conserve™. The Color Conserve shampoo and conditioner are made for color-treated hair. They extend vibrancy and help prevent premature fading between visits.
- Use a purple-toned shampoo once a week if you're blonde. It neutralizes brassiness and keeps your tone clean between visits.
- Keep up with Botanical Repair™ at home. Using it weekly helps rebuild the bonds that lightening disrupts.
- Book a gloss halfway between appointments. A refresh at 6–8 weeks can stretch your balayage for weeks longer.
As the Trusted Salon of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, our colorists create the dimensional blondes you see on the sidelines and on Netflix's America's Sweethearts. The same Aveda color system and aftercare are used for every guest at all five salons.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a consultation included?
Yes. Every balayage starts with a consultation, and first-time consultations are always complimentary. Your colorist will look at your hair, talk through your goals and give you an exact quote before anything begins.
Do you charge extra for long or thick hair?
Our menu prices are starting rates, and the final price depends on hair length, density, technique and stylist level. Long or very thick hair usually takes more time and product, so it may be priced higher. You'll know your exact price at your consultation.
Is Botanical Repair™ included?
Yes. Aveda's Botanical Repair™ bond-strengthening treatment is now included in your balayage service, so there's no separate charge.
Can I walk in for balayage?
We'll welcome a walk-in when a chair is open, but balayage takes about 2.5 to 4 hours, so an appointment is generally needed.
